In “Lost and Found: Conversations Within and About Archives,” Sherrill Grace will pose the following questions: what do we understand by the term ‘archives’ and why do many scholars and general readers find archives so compelling? While it may be easy to explain why biographers and historians need to do archival research, the current fascination with archives in fiction, drama, film, and visual art demands a more complex, nuanced explanation that responds to current issues. Through a discussion of selected contemporary examples of archival work and archival (re)constructions, Grace will invite listeners to consider the “allure of the archive’ in today’s world.
