How does Chinese Opera help us to imagine the Pacific Rim as a region of “contact zones” of cultural hybridity? Dr. Lei's leading and innovative research in this area has been of great value to those who study cultural hybridity in broad terms and with more specific reference to the history of Chinese Opera in Canada and beyond. Dr. Lei will be introduced by UBC Theatre and Film scholar Dr. Siyuan Liu and the event aims to generate a valuable “Circle of Conversation” about the role of performance in nurturing and/or resisting hybridity.

Speakers:
  • Dr. Daphne Lei, Professor, Director of Doctoral Studies, University of California, Irvine, Claire Trevor School of the Arts, Former Head of the American Society for Theatre Research (2015-2018)
