This keynote address will outline the close familial relationships between heraldry, genealogy and onomastics, focusing on the relevance of images, emblems, and objects to the study, meaning, and knowledge of names. Of primary concern is the interpretation (visualization, representation, and even transformation) of names and their meaning in other media as reflected by contemporary heraldic practice, and the granting of heraldic emblems to individuals and corporate bodies in Canada.
